back to list Unique Check Scam - 2005-03-09
Beware of a check received in the mail - made payable to a division or department!
Recently a check for $3.25 was received and deposited by an employee as a miscellaneous revenue. In the very small print, the deposit of this check contracted for a YP.Com Internet Yellow Pages advertisement with automatic debit to the City's checking account of $27.50 per month.
The division received no invoice, no other paperwork was generated - just the simple deposit of the $3.25 check. Because the details were spelled out on the check, this was not an illegal transaction on the part of the YP.Com. They have agreed to cancel the contract after discussion with the City Treasurer's office.
PLEASE BE SURE YOU KNOW THE DETAILS OF REVENUE YOU RECEIVE! Read the fine print! Your division/department could lose money from this dubious type of business practice.
Thank you for your enhanced awareness and care in processing all revenues. |
